In the late afternoons and evenings, in most Mexican towns, the locals and tourists gravitate towards the town square to spend time visiting and people watching. Families allow the younger children to play in the huge tiled area while the parents visit with friends and neighbours. Teens mill around, giggling and jostling each other the way they do everywhere in the world. It’s a time when the heat of the day eases and the cooler air invites relaxation. An easy-going attitude prevails.
Shadows are lengthening and soon the sun goes down. It’s a cool place to eat an ice cream cone or just watch people.
As the crowds gather in the square, various artists may make an appearance to sell their wares or entertain.
One fellow had many of his works of art on display and demonstrated how he made the pictures using his spray paints. It was fascinating to watch the images appear on the paper.
But when he lit the cans of spray paint, I began to worry about the safety of all the little kids who were watching him with eager faces.
After a while, the crowds thin and it’s time to wander back to our rented bungalows. We amble along the sidewalks through town and see that the swallows have already gone to bed.
Hundreds of swallows sleep here every night.
And what a foolish place for this amateur photographer to stand! My blue velour jacket needed a good wash by the time I got back to our bungalow.

What a wonderful way to get to know some of the locals and other tourists, while enjoying the lifestyle of a small laid back town. Melaque looks like a beautiful and peaceful little place. Beautiful photos, Anneli!
Thanks, Sonja. It really is a great little town for spending the winter months. We’ve been there a couple of times and I’d go back again.
Love how the sweet birds find and enjoy their space, not quite like we humans:) Lovely photos, Anneli, and a new camera coming on the beat soon?
Yes, new camera is being “broken” in. I hope to take better pictures soon. I don’t know what is making the spots on the night pictures. I’m wondering if it’s the flash lighting up something in the air.
Nice pictures. What a pretty town.
Very easy-going place. Great place to spend the cold northern winters. So is Rincon de Guayabitos.
The swallows are fantastic! Good thing those wires are parallel horizontally, not vertically.
Great pictures. They really tell the atmosphere of the place.
I think they’re great candidates for going wireless.
Just like the rest of us, they spend all night on line.
Ha ha. So they do!
I’m enjoying these warm weather pictures – thanks!
For sure it feels good to think warm these days.
Sorry, sorry, sorry, excuse me, I just had to laugh seeing those last pictures.
Interesting post, Anneli, I could need some music and crowds.
It was all very interesting until I took off my jacket and felt the wet stuff on it. I even had a gob of it in my hair!
last shot makes my day
I see you have a sense of humour!
last two photos are so perfect seated that you can’t avoid laugh
Great photographic travel story. I feel sorry for the car’s owner.
Me too! It only took seconds for my jacket to get messed on, so the car might not even have been there very long.
